The United Blood Nation The United Blood Nation (UBN) began in the year 1919 as the African Blood Brotherhood (ABB), which was a radical U.S. black liberation organization that developed close ties to the Communist Party. The group began as a political organization with a centralized national organization based in New York City and reached more than 3,000 members by 1921. Members of the ABB called themselves "Bloods" females are called "Bloodettes" and members under 18 years old are called "Young Bloods". The ABB wore red over black and green to show their affiliation. The inspiration for what would become the African Blood Brotherhood began with the appearance of a monthly journal. Journalist Cyril Briggs left the Amsterdam News to start the monthly magazine The Crusader in 1918. The first issue, published by the Hamitic League of the World, espoused African nationalist politics, but within a Marxist and Afro-Marxist context. Editorials endorsed a separatist African-American state, with government control of the means of production. Briggs demanded African-American independence from the United States, in conformance with the principles of President Wilson's Fourteen Points proposal as applied to former African colonies of European governments. The same issue of The Crusader endorsed A. Philip Randolph's campaign for New York State Assembly on the Socialist Party ticket. The Brotherhood viewed independence of the black community in the United States as a prerequisite to equality. Only with genuine political power, which included control of the means of production, including the land, could African Americans obtain genuine equality. Briggs proposed a “new solution”: “nothing more or less than independent, separate existence” was called for “Government of the (Negro) people, for the (Negro) people and by the (Negro) people.” The Crusader also asserted the right of African Americans to defend themselves against lynching and racist attacks. Racially motivated violence against African-Americans was endemic in the Jim Crow era. Large-scale attacks by white vigilantes against African-American neighborhoods were common. Historian Charles Crowe found that between 1898 and 1908, there were 40 major race riots in the South. In addition, large-scale attacks occurred in Atlanta in 1906; Springfield, Illinois in 1908; East St. Louis in 1917; Chicago, Phillips County, Arkansas and Omaha in 1919; and Tulsa in 1921. The Crusader would eventually reach a total readership of 36,000 persons, mostly in Harlem, New York City. In response to these attacks, The Crusader advocated armed self-defense. Politically, Briggs drew comparisons between government attacks on white and black radicals. He identified capitalism as the underlying cause of oppression of poor people of all races. While endorsing a Marxist analysis, The Crusader advocated a separate organization of African-Americans to defend against racist attacks in the United States, and likened this to Africans' combating colonialism abroad. In September 1919, The Crusader announced the formation of the African Blood Brotherhood, to serve as a self-defense organization for Blacks threatened by race riots and lynchings. The ABB also organized inside the UNIA-ACL and advocated a policy of critical support for Marcus Garvey. ABB leaders Briggs and Claude McKay participated in the UNIA's 1920 and 1921 international conferences in New York. At the second conference, McKay arranged for Rose Pastor Stokes, a white leader of the Communist Party, to address the assembly. The ABB became highly critical of Garvey following the apparent failure of the Black Star Line and Garvey's July 1921 Atlanta meeting with Grand Kleagle Clarke of the Ku Klux Klan. In June 1921, The Crusader announced that it had become the official organ of the African Blood Brotherhood. Arguing that the UNIA was doomed unless it developed new leadership, the magazine sought to convert the UNIA's membership to the ABB. In seeking to replace the UNIA, the ABB competed with Randolph's socialist publication The Messenger, which had called for Garvey's expulsion from the United States. In return, Garvey called for his followers to disrupt meetings of these oppositional groups. In addition to the dispute with Garvey, Briggs and the ABB were targeted for investigation by police and federal law enforcement agencies. Historian Theodore Kornweibel reports that the government began manipulating radical organizations in conjunction with legal prosecution under the pretence of disrupting opposition to World War I. Following the end of the war, a government campaign against communists, anarchists, and other radicals was instituted at the direction of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer (himself the victim of two anarchist bomb attacks) in what came to be called the First Red Scare. Government agents were secretly planted in the UNIA, ABB and The Messenger. These agents provided intelligence to the Bureau of Investigation while in some case sabotaging meetings, and acting as agents provocateurs. The ABB enjoyed a period of notoriety following the Tulsa Riot of 1921. Tulsa had an ABB chapter and news reports credited the organization with inspiring resistance to racist attacks. Many early ABB members went on to be key CP cadres for decades. The Crusader ceased publication in February 1922, following Garvey's indictment for mail fraud. Briggs continued to operate the Crusader News Service, providing news material to affiliated publications of the American black press. As cooperation with the Communist Party increased, the ABB began to slowly seperate into 2 factions. One faction was the "Loyalist ABB's", who wanted to remain loyal as the ABB. The other faction, who the loyalist ABB members reffered to as "Traitorous ABB's" wanted to merge into the Communist Party and cease to recruit separately. The leadership of the Communist International, while largely ignorant about the particulars of the situation of blacks in the United States, did understand the importance of ethnic and other non-class forms of oppression, and pushed the early CP to pay more attention to blacks in the U.S. Before this intervention by the Comintern, the party had largely ignored blacks, and thus was not particularly attractive to black radicals like Briggs. Instead, it was the Bolshevik Revolution that attraced their attention. Poet and loyalist ABB member Claude McKay has previously been active in the Left Communist Workers Socialist Federation in London and subsequently visited the Soviet Union several times in the mid-1920s, writing about conferences of the Communist International for African-American audiences. McKay's book, The Negroes in America (published in Russian in 1924 but not in the U.S. until 1979), argued against the official Communist position of the time, that the oppression of black people in the U.S. was not reducible to economic oppression, but was unique. He argued against the color blindness that the Communists had inherited from the Socialist Party. McKay argued vociferously for national self-determination in support of national independence for oppressed peoples, which to him and other loyalist ABB members, meant an independent African-American government separate and apart from that of the United States. Subsequently, in the aftermath of the Sixth Comintern Congress in 1928, the CPUSA adopted a policy of national self-determination for African-Americans living in the Black Belt of the American South. The policy was neglected after the Popular Front period began in 1935, but was not formally replaced until 1959. As the Communist Party developed, it regularized its structure along the lines called for by the Communist International (Comintern). Semi-independent organizations such as the African Blood Brotherhood with its divergent Afro-Marxist political theories were anathema to the Comintern and its Soviet leaders, who believed all communist and Marxist-Leninist organizations should be unified in a single communist party and platform in each nation under Moscow's overall direction and control. Sometime during the early 1920s the African Black Brotherhood officially split apart, with its majority "Traitorous ABB" members turning their backs on the loyalists and merging into the Workers Party of America and later into the National Negro Labor Congress, and the few "Loyalist ABB" members left on their own. With all financial and political connections gone, the Loyalist ABB members found themselves broke and holding a grudge against the members that turned their back on them which lead the Loyalist ABB members on a downward spiral. This downward spiral soon lead them to getting involved in the organized black gangs that operated in Harlem, New York, during the Prohibition (making alohol illegal) and Depression years. Harlem was a severely overcrowded and segregated community, with more than 250,000 citizens crammed into an area 50 blocks long and eight blocks wide. Estimates placed more than 5,000 people residing in a single block. Many of these people had to sleep in shifts. One would return from work to sleep, while another would vacate the bed to go to work. The bed would always remain warm for its next occupant. Many of the Harlemites could barely scrape together enough money to pay rent. This led to what became known as rent parties, which were commonly held on weekends to raise enough money to pay the landlord. If the rent was not paid by Sunday, the tenant would find their belongings thrown out on the streets. Times were hard for black people, not only in Harlem but throughout the nation. Race riots and labor riots were erupting everywhere. Racism was the rule and malcontent was the order of the day. These disrupting events marked the beginning of the Roaring Twenties. Alcohol was part of Americas culture and its people did not want to stop drinking. Prohibition forced open the countrys doors to the most ruthlessly resourceful and crooked entrepreneurs The Mob. Realizing there was a demand for alcohol, organized crime factions began making their own beer and liquor (booze, bathtub gin). Many oversaw the transportation of illegal liquor from across the Canadian border. Such operations became known as rum running. The gangsters knew that Harlem represented easy money as an outlet for the sale of their booze. Taking advantage of some of Harlems floundering businesses, members of organized crime quickly moved in through the use of intimidation and force. Black business owners never had a chance. Jack Johnson, a black man and Heavyweight Champion of the World, owned a nightclub named Club Deluxe. In 1922, Johnson became one of the first to have to sell out. Owney Madden was a mobster who had the support of the Chicago crime bosses. Madden opened Johnsons former place a year later as a whites only nightclub and renamed it The Cotton Club. In his book When Harlem Was in Vogue, David Levering Lewis called it Harlems gaudiest and best-known nightspot. Many other nightspots were opened, serving Vaudevillian-style black entertainment to the white patrons that flooded into Harlem from downtown Manhattan. Everybody was swinging and boozing. They were high times and they were really hopping. Alcohol sales and consumption climbed rapidly. Nightclubs cabarets and after-hours clubs (hotspots, hooch joints and speakeasies), on the strip of 133rd Street between Lenox and Seventh Avenues, thrived with the influx of white trade. Jazz, big bands, blues, and high-steppin, high-yeller girls set the tone. Money flowed in like water and the Mobs power grew. In the midst of all that was occurring, black artists, intellectuals and social activists flourished throughout Harlem in what is now called The Harlem Renaissance. Most Harlemites benefited very little from all that went on. They were given the menial jobs of waiters, doormen, cleaning crews, dishwashers and washroom attendants; the only positions made available to them. Only a few were able to make more money by performing as musicians and dancers for the white audiences. Still, the standing rule was that they were to only enter and exit all white only establishments through the rear entrances. It made no difference how famous the black performers were, how well-off they may have been, and what white connections they had. No black person was allowed in these clubs as a patron. This policy was very strictly enforced by the mob and their musclemen, even for racially mixed crowds. The black people in Harlem knew something needed to be done for them to be able to survive. The overt exclusion of blacks from the nations economic, social and political processes only served to foment alternative means toward becoming a part of established idealized factions, and the ABB saw this as an opportunity to step in and create a "black" version of the mafia. Black Americans were frequently denied access to bank loans, good jobs, nice homes, influential political positions, advanced educational opportunities and equal social treatment and benefits. Even those few who were affluent were still denied most social and political equalities and opportunities. To be a black person in America was to be a person looked upon by many in white society as an inferior and non-deserving being. Many black Americans turned to illegal resources to offset the economic denials and the ABB sought to keep blacks in control these illegal activities through black unification and consolidation of the Harlem gangs under one banner. Black crime in America was independently run and usually involved such traditional vices as thievery, gambling, prostitution and robbery. The ABB changed their name to the "Almighty Blood Brothers" to signify power and rebuilt on the model of a secret fraternity, organized in "posts", with secret liturature and customs. The ABB became so secretive, that gangs who were aligned under the ABB banner were not allowed to speak about it with outsiders at all. The independent gangs of Harlem began to align themselves under the ABB as a loose confederation of street gangs, or "posts", which catapolted blacks into organized crime. Every black gang in New York City soon aligned themselves under the ABB which gave them strength in numbers to finally defend their turf from the Italian Mafia. Soon, the numbers game and drugs became key factors in the evolvement of black organized crime during the 1920s and 1930s. It became very hard for the Italian Mafia or law enforcement to combat the ABB because the gangs or "posts" under the ABB banner seemed to be independent gangs and seemed to operate independently, but out of nowhere would aid and assist one another durring raids, brawls, etc. Sometimes a member of another post would retaliate against the Italian Mafia or Law Enforecement for another post, and neither the Italian Mafia nor law enforement knew why. Very well known gang leaders who's gangs where aligned under the ABB include Stephanie St. Clair (The Forty Thieves), Casper "The Bolito King" Holstein, and Bumpy Johnson. Even though their numbers declined significantly after the prohobition was lifted and there were a lot of new independent black gangs in New York who wanted no invlolvement in the ABB, the ABB remained a secret that helped a lot of small New York City Black gangs stay united all the way up until the early 1980's, when the devastating New York City crack era brought New York City to it's knees in bloody violence. When crack-cocaine hit NYC, virtually every New York City gang dismantled with their ex-members all killing each other off to controll their own crack spots. Thousand upon thousands of New Yorks ex-gang members were wiping each other out within a few short years making New York City into the nations murder capital, a feat which is hard to reach for a big city like New York. This epidemic of mass violence lasted all the way up until the early 90's, during which time many foriegn gangs began to enter New York City's streets due to virtully no more native NYC street gang presense in New York City's neighborhods. New York City gangs still had a big presence in NY jail, but had dropped any type of alliances and lost all grips in their turfs in the streets. The most notable gangs to take hold in New York City streets durring this time was the Chicago based Latin Kings and the Los Angeles Based Rolling 30's Crip gang. By 1993, the violence began to die down and the New York native gang culture began slowly rebuilding in the streets from what was left in a city that looked like it was in a military war and was now invaded by foreign gangs. Burnt down buildings, vacant lots, abandoned buildings, junk yards, blood stained streets, crack heads, crack babies, and no real native gang turf in the streets is what New York City was reduced to. At this same time O.G. Mack, whos real name is Omar Portee and is a follower of Moorish Science, saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring the ABB back and reunite New York City's black gangs. O.G. Mack was raised as a Moor by his grandmother on 183rd Street and Davidson Avenue in the Bronx and was a very young and active high ranking member of a ruthless ABB gang in the area called the One Eight Trey Gangsters before the crack era hit. He was arrested in 1988 at age 16 for an armed robbery. After serving 3 years at Rikers Island, he was released in 1991 at age 19 with a plan to resurrect his gang and the ABB alliance with the help of his religion. 2 years later (1993) he had already managed to rebuild the One Eight Trey Gangsters back to what they were before the crack era and had made them all followers of Moorish Science, but was still not sure on how to bring back the ABB. Later that same year O.G. Mack was arrested for attempted murder and sent back to Rikers Island. By early 1993 The Bloodline Latin Kings (Bloodline is a nickname for the New York State Chapter of the Latin Kings, which was started by King Blood) and the Netas were the 2 largest and most violent latino organizations on the streets and prisons of New York City and were inflicting violence on blacks along with other Latino organizations like DDP (Dominicans Don't Play), Trinitarios (3ni), La Familia, and many others. The latino organizations controlled the New York State prison systems and targeted the indepedent black gangs with daily acts of racist violence. At this time the existing independent black organizations in Rikers Island were fighting amongst themselves over street beef that they carried over into the jails and weren't recieving help from the fledgling NYG or NYC alliances. The independent black gangs desperately needed a way to unite, which would be the only way they could protect themselves. In October of 1993 O.G. Mack (who was already a high ranking member of the One Eight Trey Gangsters who's original turf is from 183rd street & Andrews avenue all the way to Webster avenue in The Bronx, NY) saw the void of unity with the independent black organizations in Rikers Island and finally saw a great opportunity to bring the ABB back into action and spread Moorish Science. He called for a meeting of several black gang leaders (most of which were involeved with the ABB in the past) and approached them with the idea of uniting their gangs together by bringing back the concepts of the ABB to expanding and help end the violence the Latin organizations were inflicting upon them. Some of the existing independent black organizations in Rikers Island were tired of fighting amongst themselves and saw this as a great opportunity to reunite and finally stop the abuse from the Latino organizations in the NY prison system. These small independent black gangs took O.G. Macks advice and alligned together to recreate the ABB. To shake off the past conflicts they decided to drop the ABB name and birth a new begining as the United Blood Nation (UBN) and they also decided to mix Moorish Science into their teaching to get their fellow brothers on a spiritual path. Within a few days, more and more black organizations in Rikers Island were being sanctioned into the UBN. One person very instrumental in helping the UBN rapidly grow was O.G. Mack's right hand man named O.G. Deadeye (Leonard Mackenzie). O.G. Deadeye got his nickname for his cloudy right eye that looked dead. Deadeye, formerly of Howard Avenue in Brooklyn, was born to a 14-year-old mother. Deadeye's rap sheet showed 11 arrests between 1985 and 1993, including three robberies, two assaults, a gun charge and a murder. O.G. Deadeye was the leader of his own gang that was based in Brooklyn and upon meeting O.G. Mack he flipped his entire gang into the GKB (Gangster Killer Bloods) a.k.a. G Shine UBN set which helped fuel the growth of the UBN in prison. Another organization that joined the UBN was the Valentine Gangsters which was created from the entire Chapter 4 of the Universal Zulu Nation flipping to the UBN under the decision of it's highest ranking leader named Valentine and their headquarters are the Bronx River Projects. Another of the original UBN sets was Sex Money Murder, which was lead by Pistol Pete (Peter Rollack) from Soundview Projects in the East Bronx. The UBN quickly became a strong force in the prison systems on the east and the Bloodline Latin Kings, Netas, DDP's Trinitarios, La Familia, and the rest of the latino organizations no longer severely out-numbered them. The unfair abuse stopped but a fair war began which lead to many years of bloodshed between Latin organizations and the UBN sets in New Yorks prison system. By the year 2001, 8 years after the UBN was first introduced in Rikers Island, the UBN was a major force in prison systems and cities all across the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida. The sets that originated under the UBN soon spread beyond the east throughout the streets of the whole south, streets in parts of the midwest, and even in west coast streets in states like Oregon and Washington. The reason for this rapid expansion is because they quickly spread through the prison systems and streets so when members started being released from jail they went back to their own separate neighborhoods, started recruiting, and either formed their own sub-clicks of each set called "Line-Ups" or "Lines" or just started a completely new UBN gang. Even though the UBN has gangs and lines in multiple cities spread throughout much of the United states, each member of these gangs and/or lines still show great loyalty to the East Coast and New York City as the motherland of the UBN no matter where they are. They all call themselves East Side Riders and throw up the East Side hand sign to show their devotion and loyalty to New York City as the motherland of the UBN. Also, many members of these gangs have broken away and branched out to form and estabish their own UBN gangs. All UBN gang members greet each other by doing a Universal UBN Handshake called the "Lock and Load" and then throwing up their particular gang/set/line/hood handsign afterwards. While they are doing this handshake, they are known to shout "Peace Blood". The UBN is known to have a secret UBN Book Of Knowledge that contains pages of information such as advanced codes, oaths, pledges, customs, and custom Moorish prayers that each of the gangs under the UBN must learn and live by. Although the UBN and the West Coast Bloods started out as two completely different organizations, they have united in 2004 when rappers The Game (a west coast blood) and Jim Jones (a member of the UBN) released the "Certified Gangsters" video, which shows West Coast Bloods and the UBN "tying their red rags in a knot" which is symbolic for comming together as Bloods. That video was the landmark moment where the lines began to be were blurred between west coast Bloods and the UBN, and although it has been kept a secret some say that it marked the moment that all Bloods in existance, from the east to the west, united under the United Blood Nation as one movement. The Green is for the land we walk on, the natural green we inhale to keep our minds at Peace, and the money we make and take together.
